7th on Sixth also use to include, for the full week of Fashion Week, the best of the best
Accessories Designers in "a Special Display area." Hats by Patricia Underwood,
Jewels by Henry Dunay, would you believe Watches by Swatch, bags by Carlos Falchi,
and so many other greats -- hair accessories, everything (in a still Life presentation).
Matter of fact, the very first "C.F.D.A. 7th on Sixth" official "Editor's Bag" was made
by Carlos Falchi. Durable and waterproof.
7th on Sixth has had (to say the least) a colorful History from the beginning. In the World of Fashion
History, and, as the first "under one roof" Fashion Shows in The City of the World it had a relatively
perfect run. Even Mother Nature co-operated most of the time. Fashion goers were graced with warm
60 and 70 degree days in Winter. Including even breaking ground to put up the tents with white snow
glistening across the Park. Yet a week later when the shows began it was: "88 degrees." What more
could you ask for ? Call it "a demonstration of unity." Into The New Millennium this is the story of "The
Runway." "The Shows." Today as we go to look at the "new collections" there is what is called "7th on
Sixth Productions (a division of IMG)." They are 2 different animals. Where one story ends and another
begins. This is good for a brief. Who am I ? The only independent video Lensperson with a works in
the Fashion Library -Video Achives- of The C.F.D.A.: "The Philip Treacy Show - Totally Cool ® ...
Takes You There." And that of course is also: another Story. On the pages of History. 7th on Sixth:
1994 - 2000.
In the end what makes it work like a charm ? The hard working models and the Press
Corps. Not to be forgotten.
In the beginning of this story we said, this is from "the lives of many." The people who compile the music
and get it to go on cue, the creative lighting people (like Gordon and his team), the riggers in the rafters,
the laborers who carry every part of the structure, the truck drivers, the people who serve the water,
the sponsors, the public relations agencies, the electricians who keep trailers of generators cooking with
power, the assistants, the hair and Make-up people, the backstage people who literally get the clothes on
and off the models in a hurry, the volunteers, the residents around the park, Jackie and Margo, Elsa, Judy
Rice (the most respected show producer and coordinator), the overseas designers, Girbaud, Ghost ... and
even the police. That is what was "7th on Sixth." But never should anyone forget what made 7th on Sixth
happen. It was and is all of the people. The people who are the viewers in Television land, the readers in
Magazine land. And most importantly -- You ... the buyers, the stores, the salespeople, and any person
who ever said "Oooh I would like to wear that." Or "You know. That would look good on me." It was
all of New York and the people of the World. That was 7th on Sixth. History.
The first showing of the "7th on Sixth Fashion Collections" began the week on Monday (first week of
November 1994) with an end of day party. And this was "a Tradition" for many years to come. To
kick off Fashion Week it was always "The Party of Parties" held by the one and only Nicole Miller. A
talented Fashion Designer and generally a nice person. Nicole did not just design "Ladies' Clothes." She
also did some Fashions for The Men. Nicole Miller did men's ties. Cool silk ties with fun graphic prints.
15 million dollars a year in men's ties. That's cool. But that week ended Friday night -- with a party like
never before (or since). It happened in the Biggest Tent, "The Gertrude." The raised runway remained.
And with loud blasting House Music filling every square foot of Space people danced the night away on
the runway -- in the bleachers -- and on the floor. How many people ? Well over a 1000. Probably by
the end of the night - 2000. It was a night for many to remember. Fern Mallis, the Executive Director
of the Council of Fashion Designers of America sat in a chair atop The Press Corps Risers along side
some man with long brown hair. Looking out at the World. The runway at their feet. On both their
faces there was a smile. Fern Mallis and her long haired friend knew one thing for sure. This was ...
a Success.
