The Art of Shaving of New York
is a quality upscale resource dedicated to the fine Art of Manual Shaving with all the classic accoutrements. We love the little wooden soap dish for one. And it goes way beyond that. They offer razors, brush stands, brushes, and a host of shaving products -- creams, oils, face balms, and even an after shave Mask. Also if you visit the web site you will find helpful shaving directions, tips, and advice. |
If you need a Gift for that man in your
life The Art Of Shaving of New York has both classic and modern Shaving kits, travel kits, leather goods, bowls, and The Art of Shaving Book (which is only $17). |
Spring Skin Deep tid bit info: You know when you go into an
old time Barber Shop and there is that long strap hanging off the side of the chair and the Barber slaps the straight edged razors back and forth on it ? That strap actually has a name. It is called a "Strop." |
If using a Straight Razor, it is
necessary to have a Strop and Strop Paste with which to sharpen the blade. Strops have two sides: one is linen and the other is leather. The linen side
warms up the blade and
softens the steel so it
can be sharpened.
The leather side
sharpens and
smooths out
the blade.
|
For a straight razor, Strop
blade for approximately
30 seconds on each side
before shaving.

Shaving Tips (courtesy of The Art of Shaving New York):
1. Use hot water with Traditional Shaving Soap to soften hair, open pores and cleanse.
2. For an onctuous lather, use with a badger Shaving Brush.
3. For best results and a very comfortable shave, place lather in center of brush and let it
sit for 5 seconds in hot water to warm up lather before shaving.
4. For a close shave, lather onto skin in an upwards motion so as to cause whiskers to lift
away from face and neck.
5. Always shave with the grain first, then lightly across or against the grain for a closer
shave.
6. Applying too much pressure when shaving against the grain can cause ingrown hairs,
and red marks or patches to appear on face or neck.
7. Stay away from products that contain numbing agents such as Benzocaine or Menthol
as these will tighten pores and stiffen beard. |
