-- In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the
ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase "goodnight, sleep tight."
-- It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's
father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer. And because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called "the honey month." We know it today as "the honeymoon."
-- In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly,

The Sony HDV camcorder includes several features to provide a total professional
solution compatible with the HDV format, including non-linear editing systems and an i.LINK interface for HD-SDI conversion. "Having a high-definition strategy is an operational requirement today, for everyone from broadcasters and program producers to wedding and event videographers and cinematographers," said Bob Ott, vice president of professional video and audio products in Sony's Broadcast and Production Systems Division. The establishment of the HDV format was jointly announced by Sony Corporation, Canon Inc., Sharp Corporation and Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC) in September 2003. HDV has been supported by Adobe Systems Incorporated, Avid Technology Inc., Canopus Co., Ltd., Miranda Technology Inc., Pinnacle Systems Inc., Sobey Digital Technology Co., Ltd., Sony Pictures Digital, Inc. and Ulead Systems Inc., and 12 other leading technology companies. In 2004, Apple announced its commitment to support the HDV format in future Final Cut Pro releases. The updated HDV format supporters' list is available at http://www.hdv-info.org/support.htm.

Sony jumps into the HDV market. Sony now has a three CCD HDV handheld video camera. Although information
on the device is scarce, a couple details have been released. The camera can record 1080 lines interlaced HDV standard video in 16:9 aspect ratio and feature 2: a 12x optical zoom. It has dedicated manual audio control in the back and dedicated iris control below the lens. The HD camcamera sells for under $5,000. That does make it one of the most affordable HD video cameras on the market and put in within reach of many sophisticated consumers. The first High Definition handheld video camera by Sony is the Sony HDC-X300. But there is more. We have the word ... a second model from Sony enters the market in WInter 2005. |
It was reported that, because of the dangers from Hurricane Isabelle approaching Washington DC, the military
members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They respectfully declined the offer, "No way, Sir !" Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a service person. Funny, the United States Senate and House of Congress took 2 days off, saying that they couldn't work because of the expected storm. The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.
I don't usually suggest that many emails be forwarded, but I'd be proud if this one reached as many as possible.
THOUGHT YOU'D LIKE TO KNOW. What an amazing bit of Americana -- |
-- Other requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of their life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under
the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform (fighting) or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up the wreath pin. The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt. There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror. The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred. Among the notables are: U.S. President Taft, Joe E. Lewis (the boxer) and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy (the most decorated soldier of WWII) of Hollywood fame. Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty. |
Subject: This is true dedication.
