The "First African American Women in Cinema Film Festival" was Launched in
March . . . in the City of the World, New York City. "Refreshingly high caliber", "Innovative," and "more enjoyable," rang true and had more humor and emotional impact on me than many feature films I have seen. The films participating in the Festival were made on a shoestring budget by young women who give great hope for The Future of American Film Making. These films inspire to make all men and women proud because of the cross cultural themes. Most of the films I reviewed were shorts. The one feature length film that I sat in on was "Kali's Vibe." A highly entertaining work in progress by first time director Shari Carpenter, an African-American lesbian herself who despite admittedly having three strikes against her (being "black, a woman and a lesbian,") shows great comedic skill in this somewhat biographical story. Who knows -- in the future she may spin it into a funny hip television sitcom ... who knows ? Anything is possible. "Dirty Laundry" by Cristina lbarra offers a highly entertaining 15 minutes about a young girl's experience of coming into puberty and her unique discovery of the advantage of the washing machine aside from doing dirty laundry. Another moving short, "Cousins" by Gaylene Gould and Sindi Gordon is a touching portrait of two British men who take care of each other in their waning years." For the mention. |
